Stax Records made 'Otis Blue', 'Soul Man' and 'Shaft' in a converted movie theater in the Soulsville neighborhood — the museum rebuilt Studio A to its 1960s floor plan, shows Isaac Hayes's gold-trimmed Cadillac Eldorado, and walks the whole story from Booker T. & the M.G.'s interracial house band through the label's 1975 collapse. It's the essential counterpart to Sun: where Sun was rockabilly, Stax was deep soul.
About $20 adult; group rates at 15+.
McLemore Ave at the museum entrance.
Do both if you can — Sun is 1950s rockabilly; Stax is 1960s soul. Different eras, same city.
